Green Car Refuelling Grants Available

A new £1 million fund has been launched to develop the UK’s low carbon vehicle infrastructure such as electric car recharging points.

The Department for Transport’s Infrastructure Grants Programme will offer both public and private sector organisations funding to install alternative refuelling facilities, including natural gas, hydrogen and bio-methane refilling stations.

Grants are on offer to cover up to 50% of a project’s eligible expenditure, including hardware costs, the cost of labour, civil engineering and ground work.

The fund will be managed by Cenex (Centre of Excellence for Low Carbon and Fuel Cell Technologies), whose CEO, Robert Evans, said:

“For fleet operators the cost of installing refuelling or recharging infrastructure has always been a barrier to switching fuel use.

“This programme will encourage operators to accelerate the introduction of lower-carbon technologies into the UK vehicle market, thereby helping cut the UK’s total carbon emissions.”

Rosie Snashall, electric vehicles and policy manager at the Department for Transport, added:

“As our delivery partner, Cenex will leverage the demand from organisations wishing to install refuelling or recharging stations for vehicles, thus enabling them to bring down the costs of reducing carbon for everyone.”

The new programme follows on from an earlier scheme previously administered by the Energy Saving Trust.
