Breckland launches its BIG lunch

Breckland Council is encouraging its residents to get involved with a nationwide community initiative called The Big Lunch by throwing street parties this summer.

The Big Lunch, orchestrated by the people behind the Eden Project, is a national initiative to encourage members of the public to enjoy each other’s company and some home-cooked food.

Mark Stokes, Services Director for Breckland is a big supporter of the scheme, and hopes to encourage residents to organise parties in the areas they live.

A date of Sunday, July 19 has been set for the street parties, and Mark hopes that groups of friends and neighbours all across Breckland will join in with the fun.

"The BIG Lunch national programme is on 19 July and we are offering one street the opportunity to win £500 towards a community project if they hold a BIG Lunch on this day or another day during July and August 2009."

The Sustainable Communities Team would like you to send in photographs of your BIG Lunch, and a letter explaining:

• How you worked together to organise the BIG Lunch
• Did you include locally grown food and live music, street art, games and competitions?
• How you would spend the £500 to put even more Pride into your community.

If you want to organise your own party in your street, and need help getting started, visit www.thebiglunch.com or contact Cat Lang – Community Development Officer on 01362 656 870.

You can register your street on The Big Lunch website and download an organiser’s pack to help you along the way.

Please note: photographs are not returnable.
