Local politicians put in the spadework – for a good cause

Parliamentary candidate Elizabeth Truss demonstrated that, when it comes to supporting local projects, she is more than happy to put in the spadework. Joined by Norfolk County Councillor for the Environment Ian Monson, last Friday Elizabeth Truss helped in the planting of over 5,000 spring bulbs and 20 trees on two of Weeting’s village greens. Weeting parish councillors and villagers also turned out in force to help.

Newly elected Weeting Parish Councillor, Sarah Bottorff, led the project on behalf of the Parish Council in a bid to brighten up the village greens and improve the appearance of the village for both residents and visitors. Robert Childerhouse, Weeting resident and Breckland District Councillor for Weeting, organised the funding bids and helped Sarah with the co-ordination of the event.

A £250 Pride in Breckland grant funded the purchase of narcissus, mixed daffodil, snowdrop and bluebell bulbs. Beech, chestnut & oak trees and protective guards were donated by Childerhouse Lodge Farms, Weeting and additional funding was provided for this community project by Weeting Parish Council.

Executive Member for Communities, Theresa Hewett, was delighted that so many local people had turned out to back the project;

“The Pride in Breckland grant scheme helps to support people in improving their neighbourhood environment, and it’s clear that there is fantastic local backing for this project to add spring colour to the village’s main greens. Even the very young children of the village have been involved - youngsters from Weeting Pre-School & Weeting Primary School came out and planted up their own special areas”

The ‘Planting Afternoon’ marked one of the final stages of the parish greens’ regeneration project.
